Student Awareness Initiative Promoting Eco-Friendly Idols

An awareness program was organized jointly by Berhampur Sabuja Bahini, Satya Art and Craft, and Berhampur Municipal High School, Old Berhampur, to encourage students to avoid chemical-based idols during the festive season. As part of the initiative, students were trained to make eco-friendly Ganesh idols using natural materials.

Sand artist Satyanarayan Maharana provided hands-on training to the students on how to create Ganesh idols using clay, turmeric, and vermilion. The students also actively participated and made idols on their own.

In the current festive season, there is a growing trend of making attractive idols using chemical-based materials. However, during idol immersion, these materials can pollute water bodies. This pollution may lead to skin-related health issues among local residents who depend on these water sources and can also harm aquatic life such as fish and other organisms.

Keeping this in mind, students were trained to make idols using eco-friendly materials so that they can become more environmentally conscious.

The program was attended by Berhampur Sabuja Bahini President Shibaram Panigrahi, Secretary A. Prakash, members P. Binod, Sagar Kumar Patra, Sujit Gouda, Munna Satpathy; Head of Satya Art and Craft Satyanarayan Maharana; Headmistress of Government Municipal High School Pramila Kumari Patnaik; Eco Club teacher Lopamudra Patnaik; former teacher Santosh Kumar Rath; along with other teaching staff of the school.
